Product Details

The Smoke Shutoff is a power strip with a smoke detector which controls a relay.  When smoke is detected, an alarm is sounded and electrical current is halted to any devices plugged into the power strip.  The alarm continues to sound until the smoke hazard is cleared.  Power is not restored to plugged in devices, however, until the reset button is pressed on the Smoke Shutoff — this prevents plugged in devices from resuming hazardous operation.

The smoke detection sensitivity is similar to household smoke detectors.  The closer the device is placed to the source of the smoke, the more likely the smoke will be detected.  The Smoke Shutoff has holes for  mounting on walls near the airflow (and possibly smoke) from plugged in devices.

Turning off power is crucial in many situations where devices are left plugged in unattended.

· In a barn or greenhouse, straw could be kicked or vegetation could fall on a heater, lamp or fan.  Eventually a fire could start.

· A child may throw clothes or a towel on top of a lamp and run out the door.  Left unattended, the material could catch fire.

· A pet may knock over a lamp, causing it to eventually ignite combustibles the bulb contacts.

· A computer or piece of home electronics may short circuit or begin smoking.

In the many cases where you’d prefer to have devices shut down instead of creating a smoke alarm and causing a fire department response, possibly breaking your door if nobody’s home, this product can save you money and hardship.

This power strip doesn’t guarantee fire prevention, but it can reduce the chance of smoke damage and fire damage on your property, and make your occupants safer.

Warning: This is not a smoke alarm.  Do not use this device as a substitute for a properly installed NFPA 72 compliant smoke alarm.  This power strip could be considered secondary point detection
